I have been thinking of professional sports more since the NFL ref lock out and the NHL lock out this season. Professional sports have always sort of irked me and I never really knew why, until the realization that they want to act one way and be viewed another.
Professional sports want to be viewed as both a social institution and a private company. They want to be something that is part of and adds value to the community they are in, like a park or a theatre. They also want to have the freedom of autonomy to make money and seek better deals like a normal corperation. I say if sell yourself as part of the community, then the community owns you and should hold stock in you, if you are a business, then you can’t ask communities to build you new stadiums. Pick one.
